Alfa Romeo entered the 3 litre formula in 1938 with the Alfa Romeo Tipo 308, with independent suspension and a very distinct appearance. Many consider that the Alfa factory produced one of the most beautiful GP cars of the era. The Tipo 308 was a development of the classic 8 cylinder car with the bore increased from 68 to 69 mm changing the volume from 2905 to 2994 cc. Fuel was held in a saddle tank over the driver's feet to improve the weight distribution and handling. One of only four of these cars ever made was driven in 1938 and 1939 by Raymond Sommer the Frence ace. Sommer won the 1939 Circuit des Remparts in this car beating Horvilleur in the Maserati(2nd) and Durand in the Bugatti(3rd). |
