The "D" Type Jaguar is said to be one of the most beautiful racing sports cars ever made, its clean and purposeful lines eventually finding their way to the road going "E" Type. The "D" Type won many races in the 1950's including the Le Mans 3 times in a row with victories in 1955, 1956 and 1957. The first of these victories in 1955 was overshadowed by one of the worst accidents in motor racing history when a Mercedes crashed into the crowd killing 80 specators. The victorious number 6 "D" Type driven by Mike Hawthorn and Ivor Bued lead from the start and proved to be worthy winners. Hawthorn and Fangio in the Mercedes gave the spectators an astonishing display of wheel-to-wheel racing that Le mans had ever seen. At 23 minutes before the end of the race Hawthorn broke the overall distance record for Le Mans and under the circumstances proved a great achievement. |
